Heads-up: what to steer clear of
- Scam: Some street money changers short-change visitors with sleight of hand. Use bank-affiliated changers or ATMs inside banks, and count your cash at the counter.
- Local rules: Respect temple dress codes (a sarong and sash), and never sit or climb on shrines. Foreign visitors have been deported for disrespectful behaviour.
- Safety: Scooter crashes are the most common serious injury. Only ride if you're licensed, insured and wearing a helmet.
Giro's notes, reviewed October 2026. Things change, so check current advice before you go: Government of Canada travel advisories .
Good to know
- Hire a driver for the day (~$45) rather than renting a scooter if you're inexperienced.
- Wear a sarong at temples; they're often lent at the entrance.
- Nyepi (Day of Silence) shuts the island down for a day, usually in March.
