Heads-up: what to steer clear of
- Getting around: Agree taxi fares before you get in (there are no meters), or book transfers in advance. Ignore the timeshare and transport sellers in the airport arrivals hall.
- Scam: "Free" breakfasts and tours are often timeshare sales pitches lasting hours. Decline anything tied to a presentation.
- Safety: Check the beach flags: red means dangerous currents. Seaweed (sargassum) season can also close beaches.
Giro's notes, reviewed October 2026. Things change, so check current advice before you go: Government of Canada travel advisories .
Good to know
- Sargassum seaweed varies by season; check beach reports.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, which is required at cenotes and parks.
- ADO buses are a comfortable, cheap way along the coast.
