Heads-up: what to steer clear of
- Local rules: Some private lanes in Gion ban photography and entry, with posted fines. Never photograph geiko or maiko without permission.
- Getting around: City buses get very full near Kiyomizu and Kinkaku-ji. Trains and walking are often faster, and large luggage is better sent ahead with a delivery service.
- Safety: Kyoto summers are very hot and humid; carry water and plan temple visits for the morning.

Good to know
- Buses get crowded; combine walking with subway lines.
- Start at the big sights at opening time to beat tour groups.
- Photography of geiko and maiko in Gion's private lanes is restricted.
